Discover Sure Roofing’s Hybrid Flat Roof System
San Francisco’s Best Value Roofing Assembly
When purchasing a new roof, there are literally dozens of options available to you with prices that could vary wildly depending on the myriad of choices you could make. We have made the decision simple for building owners by offering our signature Sure Secure Hybrid flat roof method which includes the components and work details that we know provide maximum quality, life spans, and value.
Installing flat roofs in San Francisco and the surrounding areas for more than three decades has taught us very well what works and what doesn’t, and we have incorporated all of those lessons learned into our signature roofing system.
What Is a Tar and Gravel (BUR) Roof?
While tar and gravel roofs have been the normal offering for decades, they have their limitations and are certainly “old school” in their technology. They are also referred to as BUR (“Built Up Roof”) roofs because they are literally built up by a crew in layers of hot, liquid asphalt laminated between felt paper, usually with a layer of gravel on top. This system requires an experienced crew and multiple layers in order to be effective as consistency and thickness are critical to their longevity. Unfortunately, exposure to sun deteriorates the tar in these systems and begins the process of their decomposition very quickly.
Once the asphalt has been compromised by the UV rays in sunlight, it loses its two most important properties, adhesion and flexibility, and stops functioning as a waterproof membrane. See these photos of a typical 15-year-old tar and gravel roof:

Fortunately, there is a much better option today.
Introducing the Sure Secure Hybrid System
Sure Roofing’s Sure Secure Hybrid (SSH) flat roof system starts with a high-quality, heat-installed, modified bitumen primary roof and seals and protects that with our proprietary fluid-applied roof system. Richard Choy has perfected this assembly over decades of flat roof experience in San Francisco. While “modified” roofs are common in San Francisco and good enough for a lot of roofers and building owners, they have one characteristic that shortens their lifespan: They deteriorate in heat and sun. Because the primary waterproofing ingredient is petroleum asphalt (not unlike tar and gravel roofs), they should be sheltered from this damaging effect.
Why Reflective Topcoats Matter
Our Sure Secure Hybrid system uses these modified roofs as a foundation, and then seals and permanently shades them from the damaging effects of the sun. Our reflective topcoat dramatically minimizes absorption of both UV and IR rays, keeping the base roof cooler, softer, and more pliable for decades. We believe it is the best possible system in the business, and we don’t think you a buy a better flat roof for a San Francisco structure.
